Argument after Super Bowl party leads to deadly shooting in south Phoenix

PHOENIX – An argument after a Super Bowl party ended in a deadly shooting at a south Phoenix apartment, authorities said.

Officers responded to a shooting call at a complex on Alta Vista Road near Seventh and Southern Avenues around 11:30 p.m. Sunday and found Isaiah Raymone Springs, 35, suffering from a gunshot wound, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Springs was taken to a hospital in critical condition and was pronounced dead around 5:20 a.m. Monday, according to court records.

Quinton Denard Pierce, 44, was taken into custody after the shooting and was later booked into jail on counts of second-degree murder and endangerment. His bond was set at $1 million.

Pierce described himself as a disabled veteran. Police said he was injured in Iraq and has shrapnel in his body but is mobile and can walk.

What happened on night of deadly shooting in Phoenix?

The victim and suspect were among a group of people who attended a Super Bowl party at a different Phoenix location earlier Sunday, according to the probable cause statement for Pierce’s arrest.

Springs allegedly had been arguing with the mother of his 2-month-old baby at the party.

After the party, Pierce went to a liquor store with his cousin. Later, he received a text message from the mother of Springs’ baby asking him to come to the apartment on Alta Vista Road.

When Pierce arrived, Springs allegedly became argumentative with him. Peirce said he fired his gun “out of instinct” when Springs lunged at him in a hallway.

“You come at me, I will shoot you. I am an armed security guard; you already know that,” Peirce warned Springs before the deadly shooting, according to the probable cause statement.

Police found an unloaded Glock handgun and a spent casing at the scene.
