Crews begin installation for annual ZooLights at Phoenix Zoo

PHOENIX — It’s only July, but it’s not too early for the Phoenix Zoo to start preparations for its annual winter illumination event.

Crews have already started installing lights, displays and lanterns for the 30th year of ZooLights, which is scheduled to kick off Nov. 24 and run through Jan. 14.

It takes approximately five months to complete the ZooLights setup — millions of lights have to be installed — so summer work is a necessity despite the heat.

There will be several new features at ZooLights this year, according to the zoo.

They include displays of a herd of bison, a cougar, a gorilla and illuminated light boxes showcasing animal artistry.

Last year, the Phoenix Zoo offered modified options for the event due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A drive-thru option called Cruise the ZooLights debuted as a way for visitors to enjoy the event without coming into contact with other people during pandemic.
