Crash closes South Mountain Freeway in West Valley during rush hour

PHOENIX — A multi-vehicle crash closed the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway in the West Valley during rush hour on Tuesday.

The northbound lanes of the freeway were closed near Buckeye Road at about 4:30 p.m. for the accident, which included two semi-trucks and several other vehicles.

Phoenix Fire Capt. Rob McDade said in an email that three people — a 44-year-old female, a 29-year-old female and a 2-year-old male — were transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.

A 21-year-old female was also transported to the hospital with minor injuries, McDade said. A total of eight people were treated at the scene.

One of the semi-trucks was leaking diesel fuel while the other was transporting acetylene and oxygen tanks, McDade said.

Traffic had to exit the freeway at Buckeye Road and was backed up to Broadway Road.

The freeway reopened at about 8:30 p.m. The southbound lanes were not affected by the crash.
