PHOENIX — A couple from Mesa filed a complaint with the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office on Monday accusing a group of filming and following them from a drop box.

The husband said the group was at the Mesa Juvenile Court drop box, located near Baseline and McQueen roads, at about 6:40 p.m. Monday when they were dropping off their ballots, according to the complaint.

The group started filming and photographing the couple, accusing them of being mules, the complaint said.

The conduct continued after the ballots were dropped off.

The group took pictures of the couple’s license plate and followed them out of the parking lot while their cameras continued to roll, according to the complaint.

The SOS has talked to the voter, informed Maricopa County and referred the report to the DOJ and AG’s offices for further investigation.

No other information on the incident was immediately available.

Unfounded concerns about the security of drop boxes arose following the 2020 election, notably from movie “2000 Mules.”

Praised by former President Donald Trump as exposing “great election fraud,” the movie paints an ominous picture suggesting Democrat-aligned ballot “mules” were supposedly paid to illegally collect and drop off ballots in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

But that’s based on faulty assumptions, anonymous accounts and improper analysis of cellphone location data, which is not precise enough to confirm that somebody deposited a ballot into a drop box, according to experts.

Early voting in Arizona for the Nov. 8 midterm election began Oct. 12.
