Maricopa County breaks ground on new Animal Care & Control location in Glendale

Ground was broken earlier this week on the new Maricopa County Animal Care & Control (MCACC) facility in Glendale, which is meant to increase West Valley residents’ access to shelter services.

Construction started Wednesday on the location near Glen Harbor Boulevard and Northern Avenue, which is expected to be complete in May 2028.

It will not only provide sheltering services but also veterinary care, spay and neutering, licensing, adoptions as well as volunteer and foster opportunities.

“This state-of-the-art campus will expand our capacity to shelter animals humanely, support adoptions and serve West Valley families,” Maricopa County Board Chair Kate Brophy McGee said in a news release. “It reflects Maricopa County’s commitment to animal welfare and public health.”

Multistudio and Animals Arts designed the almost 94,000 square-foot facility to have more than 600 kennels and 18 plays yards with increased access to daylight, outdoor space and fresh air.

The kennel runs are also separated to make caring for animals easier, improve safety and support the pets’ well-being.

“This new facility will help us deliver important services to more people and pets in our growing county by giving our teams the space, tools and environment they need to protect animal welfare, support adoptions and strengthen public health and safety,” MCACC Director Debbie McKnight said.

General contractor Kitchell will be building the facility, which will have low-stimulation housing for shy and fearful dogs.

It will also feature a grooming room, pet portrait photo studio, large multi-purpose room and walking path along New River.

Once it is complete, the location will consist of administrative space, public lobbies, intake and adoption areas, a full veterinary clinic, partner work areas and service spaces.
