PHOENIX — Arizona law enforcement officers made nearly 30% more DUI arrests this Cinco de Mayo weekend than over last year’s holiday.

Officers made 415 DUI arrests from May 3-5 this year, compared to 325 in 2018 and 504 in 2017.

This year, 59 of those arrests were for aggravated DUI and 120 were for extreme DUI (meaning the driver had a blood alcohol concentration of over 0.15).

The nearly 2,000 officers participating in DUI task forces also gave out 246 seat belt citations, 140 criminal speed citations and 17 liquor law citations out of a total of about 9,300 traffic stops.

“These statistics are the result of the dedication and training of police and highway patrol officers, sheriff deputies, volunteers, and other law enforcement personnel that comprise the DUI task forces throughout Arizona,” the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety said in a press release.

“Our goal is to reduce crashes, fatalities and injuries on our streets and highways by enforcing DUI and traffic laws in our state.”
