Man who fired at Chandler police after woman he tied up escaped hotel room gets 25 years in prison

PHOENIX — A man was sentenced to 25 years in prison for firing at police officers answering a domestic violence call in Chandler, authorities announced Monday.

Cody Long, 33, shot at officers with the Chandler Police Department in March 2024, according to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.

His charges included aggravated assault for strangling and kidnapping a woman at a DoubleTree by Hilton hotel at Interstate 10 and West Chandler Boulevard, according to initial police reports.

Long pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated assault, one count of misconduct involving weapons and one count of unlawful flight from a law enforcement vehicle.

Officers arrived to the scene after receiving a report that Cody had tied up a woman to prevent her from escaping a hotel room. He took her phone away so she couldn’t call for help and threatened her with a handgun, prosecutors said.

However, the woman escaped while Long was in the bathroom and called for help, which led toa  staff member calling police to report a domestic violence disturbance.

When police arrived, they tried to make contact with Long, at which point he started firing at officers, prosecutors said. They took cover and returned fire, striking him.

Long was brought to a hospital for treatment and later taken into custody.

Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell commended Long’s victim for escaping and calling for help.

“Knowing her life was in danger, this domestic violence survivor had the courage to break free from a violent offender,” Mitchell said in the announcement. “We will continue to stand with victims and ensure dangerous abusers face the consequences of their actions.”
