Candidate’s abortion stance is significant for majority of Arizona voters

PHOENIX – About six in 10 Arizona voters say a candidate’s stance on abortion will have a significant impact on their ballot choices, according to polling data released Wednesday.

And a plurality of Arizona voters oppose overturning Roe vs. Wade, the landmark ruling that protects abortion rights at the federal level, according to findings by OH Predictive Insights.

The Phoenix-based firm’s public opinion poll of registered voters was conducted May 9-16, about a week after a draft opinion was leaked that apparently shows the U.S. Supreme Court intends to overturn the 1973 decision.

Nearly two-thirds of the respondents, 59%, said a candidate’s abortion stance will be either “very” or “somewhat” impactful in how they vote. Under 20% said it would be “lightly” or “least” impactful.

The impact is stronger for Democrats (72% at very or somewhat) than Republicans (52%) or independents (56%).

“All this uproar at the Supreme Court might be the kick in the side that Democratic voters need to compete with Republicans at the ballot box,” said Mike Noble, OH Predictive Insights chief of research.

When asked what they thought about Roe vs. Wade, 49% of respondents said they somewhat or strongly opposed it being overturned. That was significantly more than the 31% who said they somewhat or strongly supported overturning the ruling.

“I am expecting to see many Democrats and possibly independents leading the share of those who are more enthused to vote in the upcoming midterms if Roe v. Wade is overturned,” Noble said.

“The unknown part is whether this issue will have enough of an impact to offset the pro-GOP political climate.”
