Woman released after allegedly shooting and killing boyfriend in Phoenix

A woman was released from police custody after allegedly shooting and killing her boyfriend on Monday, authorities said.

PHOENIX — A woman was released from police custody after allegedly shooting and killing her boyfriend on Monday, authorities said.

Tony Garcia, 46, was identified as the man who died in the shooting, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

At 1:30 a.m., officers were called out near the area of 23rd Avenue and Butler Drive about a shooting.

As officers arrived, they found Garcia suffering from a gunshot wound.

Fire officials took Garcia to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries, police said.

Police detained a woman at the home who said Garcia was her boyfriend, police said.

After detectives completed an investigation, they learned there was an assault that led to the shooting.

Police released the woman from custody pending the outcome of the investigation after working with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.

The investigation is ongoing.
