Book it: Phoenix libraries to start reopening doors next week

PHOENIX – More than a year after closing their doors in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, Phoenix Public Library buildings will begin a phased reopening process next week.

The Phoenix City Council voted unanimously last week to resume indoor library operations, although reservations, face coverings and social distancing will be required.

The following eight libraries will welcome visitors again on Monday: Burton Barr Central, Agave, Cesar Chavez, Cholla, Desert Broom, Ironwood, Mesquite and Palo Verde.

Then on May 3, the Desert Sage, Harmon, Juniper and Saguaro branches will reopen.

The remaining four locations – Acacia, Century, Ocotillo Library & Workforce Literacy Center and Yucca — will open their doors on May 17.

Residents can make reservations for 45-minute visits up to three days in advance, starting Friday, through phoenixpubliclibrary.org or the library call center at 602-262-4636.

Drop-in visitors can request reservations at the door, but each facility will have a designated capacity limit that will vary by location.

The buildings will be open from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday-Saturday, with checkouts available through self-service kiosks and internet access among the services offered.

Curbside pickups for items checked out online will continue Monday-Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

Phoenix Public Library buildings have been closed since March 16, 2020. Residents have been able to check out items for curbside pickup at most locations since May of last year.
