Search crews recover body of man swept away by floodwaters in New River over weekend

PHOENIX – The body of a man who was swept away by floodwaters in the far north Valley over the weekend was recovered Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The discovery was made after the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit and Lake Patrol deputies resumed search efforts in New River.

MCSO responded to multiple calls about vehicles getting caught in Agua Fria River flooding during Sunday’s storms.

Around 10 a.m., rescue crews were dispatched after a vehicle was swept away near Interstate 17 and Table Mesa Road, about 40 miles north of downtown Phoenix.

They successfully extracted a passenger in a helicopter hoist operation, but they were unable to rescue the driver.

No other details about how the man’s body was found were immediately available.

It was Arizona’s second deadly flooding incident during recent storms.

Search crews found the body of 74-year-old David Otero on Thursday, two days after his car was swept away in flash flooding in Cordes Lakes.
