Body recovered from construction site in Tempe as police look for missing 91-year-old

PHOENIX — A body has been found at a construction site in Tempe, authorities announced Wednesday.

The body was found near McClintock and Weber drives and has not yet been formally identified, according to the Tempe Police Department. (UPDATE: The body has been confirmed as Apolonio Romero, police announced on Jan. 20.)

Police noted that the body was discovered as officers are actively searching for missing 91-year-old Apolonio Romero.

Romero was last seen near Scottsdale and Curry roads on Jan. 3, according to a SAFE Alert issued by the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Romero reportedly has a medical condition that causes him to be easily lost and confused.

Tempe’s Fire Department, the Scottsdale Police Department, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office and Salt River Police Department are all helping the city’s police department in the search, along with volunteers and family members.

A Tempe police spokesperson promised to provide updates as they became available.

Police are asking the public for continued patience as the identification process moves forward.

SAFE Alerts have replaced Silver Alerts in Arizona as a way to spread the word about missing persons who are 65 and older and missing persons who have dementia or developmental/cognitive disabilities.
