Suspect arrested after bicyclist killed in hit and run in Phoenix

A bicycle rider died after a hit-and-run on Tuesday morning, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Officers who responded to the area of Greenway and Cave Creek roads shortly before 6 a.m. found the bicycle rider in critical condition. She was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Police said the suspected driver, Martin Sanchez, left the scene but was located and arrested a short time later.

Investigators said Sanchez was driving east on Greenway Road, and as he turned left onto Cave Creek Road he failed to yield to the bicyclist.

After striking the bicyclist, Sanchez allegedly stopped the car and a passenger got out before he left the area, police said. He was later arrested at a nearby residence.

Sanchez was booked into jail on a felony hit-and-run charge and a misdemeanor charge of causing an accident resulting in death. His bond was set at $200,000.

Area roadways were restricted while the scene was under investigation.
