West Valley zoo welcomes new baby reticulated giraffe

PHOENIX — The Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium and Safari Park earlier this month welcomed a baby reticulated giraffe, and visitors can meet her at the West Valley venue now.

Bailey was born healthy on March 15 and stands at 6 feet tall. She arrived after one of the animal kingdom’s longest gestation period, up to 15 months.

The baby has been bonding with her attentive mother DeeDee and exploring her new surroundings, according to zoo officials.

The pair can be seen daily at the zoo’s giraffe exhibit, where guests can utilize a 12-foot feeding station to view and interact with them more on their level.

The zoo is open 365 days a year at Loop 303 and Northern Avenue in Litchfield Park.

Reticulated giraffes get their name for their net-like spots. They are one of the rarest types of giraffes, with an estimated 16,000 remaining in the wild.

The Wildlife World Zoo has played a part in preserving the species, housing previous reticulated giraffe births, such as Austin back in 2018.

The zoo is a partner of Save Giraffes Now, a nonprofit group that does conservation work in Africa.

Zoo officials credit Arizona’s arid climate, which can resemble the African savanna, for their successful efforts.
