Arrest made in fatal stabbing of 62-year-old woman in Glendale

PHOENIX — The Glendale Police Department arrested a man on Thursday whom they believe fatally stabbed a 62-year-old woman earlier this year.

James Marshaun Christopher Weekly, 27, was accused of killing Judy Ann Lopez on April 28, police said.

Weekly allegedly stabbed Lopez in the neck near 83rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road. She died from her injuries in the hospital.

Officers found a blood trail from a bus stop to where Lopez’s body had been found, according to court documents.

Detectives found she had boarded a bus at 59th Avenue and Bethany Home Road around 8:51 p.m.

Bus footage revealed she got off the bus around 8:57 p.m. with two males, including Weekly.

Investigators later saw Lopez holding her hand to her neck via surveillance footage, according to court documents.

Why did police arrest Weekly for Lopez’s fatal stabbing?

Lopez’s phone data ultimately helped investigators identify Weekly as their suspect. They used a search warrant to find what appeared to be the victim’s phone broken in half, as well as clothes Weekly was seen wearing while exiting the bus with Lopez.

During police interviews at Glendale City Jail, Weekly allegedly claimed that he saw Lopez acting “crazy” and touched her to check on her, after which she scratched him while pushing his arm away, according to court documents.

That is when Weekly allegedly stabbed Lopez in the neck with the metal pen that he was holding.

He allegedly said he threw the pen away in one of the park’s trash cans.

Weekly allegedly said he wanted to make Lopez hurt and bleed because she had made him bleed, court documents said.

Weekly is facing one count of second-degree murder.
