Apparent fight mediator dead from stabbing in south Phoenix, suspect arrested

PHOENIX — Police arrested a man who allegedly killed a woman south of downtown Phoenix on Saturday, authorities said.

William Washington, 53, was arrested for reportedly stabbing and killing 35-year-old Stephanie Barr, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Officers responded to reports of a stabbing incident around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday night in the area of 2400 S. Central Ave.

When police arrived on the scene they found an adult female, later identified as Barr, suffering from a stab wound. She was transported to the hospital where she died from her injuries, authorities said.

Patrol officers reportedly began to search the area around where the stabbing occurred, found Washington and then took him into custody without incident.

Homicides detectives then arrived and took over the investigation.

According to Phoenix Police, it was discovered that Washington had been arguing with another man when he pulled out a knife, Barr tried to separate the two men and was stabbed.

Washington has been booked into jail for second-degree murder.

This is an ongoing investigation.
