Arizona’s Julie Johnston is a World Cup champion

PHOENIX — The United States Women’s National Team are World Cup champions, thanks in large part to Arizona native Julie Johnston.

The Mesa-born centerback started every game for the team during their seven-game run through the tournament, culminating in a 5-2 win over Japan Sunday.

Johnston was also named the player of the match in the United States’ 1-0 win over Nigeria on June 16, a win that help the U.S. advance out of group play to the knockout stage.

During the game, Johnston made several keys plays — including stopping a breakaway — and scored a goal that was disallowed by a narrow offsides call. Fox’s rule specialist said the goal should have counted.

The victory in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015 Final marks the third time the U.S. has won the Women’s World Cup.
