Arizona locks into multistate lawsuit against Trump administration over halt on EV funding

PHOENIX — Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes on Wednesday plugged the state into another multistate lawsuit to stop the Trump administration from withholding billions for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.

This is the third lawsuit Arizona has joined this week. The other two filed were for cutbacks on wind energy and health care.

“Arizona will lose nearly $50 million in critical funding unless the courts block yet another illegal action by the Trump administration,” Mayes said in a press release.

Details on EV funding and Arizona lawsuits

In February, President Donald Trump ordered states to roll back on EV infrastructure spending. Former President Joe Biden granted $5 billion dollars to states over 5 years to invest in EV infrastructure across the country.

In 2022, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) was passed by Congress, granting billions to the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Formula Program (NEVI).

Trump signed an executive order in January that placed a pause on IIJA and NEVI funding even though Congress approved the funding.

This is the 17th lawsuit Arizona has taken part in against the Trump administration.

Other lawsuits against Trump include withholding funding from education and Americorps.

“I will not stop fighting to protect Arizona from the flood of illegal and unconstitutional actions by President Trump,” Mayes said.
