Arizonans have 2 months until deadline to upgrade to new travel IDs

PHOENIX — Nothing dampens wanderlust like being told you can’t get on your flight because your ID is outdated.

This could happen to travelers who don’t update their identification to meet new federal standards.

The deadline to obtain an Arizona Travel ID card is May 7. So far, over 2.5 million people in the state have upgraded their identification to meet the federal standards.

How to get an Arizona Travel ID card

People who want to upgrade their IDs before traveling can walk into an office with the Arizona Motor Vehicle Department (AZMVD) to get the job done.

Federal standards require:

• Proof of identity: a birth certificate or U.S. passport.
• Social Security number: just the number, not the card.
• Two documents proving Arizona residency, such as rental or bank statements, credit card or cellphone bills in your name with your current Arizona address.

However, it’s suggested that people schedule an appointment online ahead of time. People can do this even if they haven’t activated their AZMVD account.

People who need to go late in the day or on Saturdays can also get the job done at an authorized third-party location.
