Arizona specialty license plates top 1 million for first time
Drivers bought a record 1,001,188 specialty plates, raising $15.8M for 104 Arizona charities. Vanity personalization costs an extra $25 a year.

Arizona drivers bought or renewed more than 1 million specialty license plates in a single year for the first time ever. The personalized vehicle flair brought in a record $15.8 million for charitable organizations, the state’s Motor Vehicle Division announced.
A total of 1,001,188 specialty plates were purchased or renewed during the fiscal year that ended June 30. The proceeds will be distributed among 104 charitable organizations that sponsor the plates.
Most specialty plates cost an extra $25 a year, with $17 going to a designated charity or nonprofit. Options include plates featuring professional sports teams such as the Cardinals, Diamondbacks and Suns, along with tribal, military, veteran and educational designs, and one celebrating Route 66.
“Specialty license plates continue to be a fun way to personalize your vehicle, while supporting one of these uniquely Arizona organizations,” MVD Director Michael Cryderman said.
Specialty plates, authorized by the Arizona Legislature, have been offered since 1989.
