PHOENIX – Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb went above and beyond the call of duty recently by helping turn a “traffic stop” into a marriage proposal for one pair of Arizona lovebirds.
Lamb posted video of couple’s viral moment to his social media accounts Saturday.
By Wednesday afternoon, the posts on Facebook and Twitter had garnered a total of more than 70,000 views and 4,000 likes and positive reactions.
Department spokeswoman Navideh Forghani told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Wednesday that the man identified as Darin in the video asked a friend who works for the sheriff’s office to help make the proposal extra special.
Chelsey, the object of Darin’s affection, is a big fan of “Live PD,” the A&E reality show that frequently features Lamb.
“The sheriff had a bunch of other events going on that day but managed to agree to it because it’s just a small gesture to make someone’s day,” Forghani said.
“And she obviously was super surprised. She recognized the sheriff from ‘Live PD.’ You can kind of see her mouth that, ‘Oh my god, is that Sheriff Lamb?’”
The video starts with Lamb talking to the camera about the plan.
After pulling over the SUV Chelsey is driving, he tells her she was speeding.
Lamb asks Darin, who does an admirable job of keeping a straight face, to step out of the car. They talk briefly behind the vehicle, where Chelsey can’t hear, and Lamb asks Darin if he’s ready.
“Ready as I’ll ever be,” Darin says.
Lamb brings Chelsey out of the SUV, and Darin drops to one knee, pulls out a ring and pops the question.
“Yeah,” replies an emotional Chelsey, clearly surprised but thrilled at the turn of events.
