Arizona poll shows Joe Biden increases lead over Donald Trump

PHOENIX – Democratic challenger Joe Biden has pulled ahead of President Donald Trump by double figures in a Phoenix-based poll of likely Arizona voters.

The OH Predictive Insights survey released Monday put Biden up 52%-42% after Trump had closed the gap in two consecutive monthly polls.

Trump trailed 49%-45% in an August poll, and 49%-44% in July. Biden’s previous best showing was 50%-43% in May.

On Trump’s worst day in Arizona polling, “he hasn’t dipped below 43%,” OH Predictive Insights chief researcher Mike Noble told KTAR News 92.3 FM, “until today.”

The phone poll of 600 was taken Sept. 8-10 and was announced hours ahead of the president’s fifth campaign visit to Phoenix.

The poll’s margin of error is plus or minus 4%.

Trump will speak to Latino voters in a Monday afternoon roundtable event at the Arizona Grand Resort near Interstate 10 and Baseline Road.

The poll also showed Trump lost ground with some older Republican voters. After reaching 78% in support from the group 55 and up before the coronavirus pandemic, Trump now has 69%.

Biden’s support from that group jumped from 14% to 26%.

Trump’s approval rating also suffered in Arizona. The survey found 47% strongly disapproved of his job performance. Breaking down the number, 85% of Democrats and 53% of independents said they felt that way.

According to the polling average compiled by FiveThirtyEight.com, Trump trails Biden by 5 points in Arizona.
