Arizona Humane Society rescues baby owl that apparently fell while practicing flying

Apr 9, 2022, 6:30 AM

PHOENIX — The Arizona Humane Society came to the rescue of a baby owl on Thursday who they believe fell when trying to practice flying.

The nonprofit organization said in a press release that a family of owls for the past several years has resided near its barn at the Nina Mason Pulliam South Mountain Campus during the breeding season.

Medical technicians that found the approximately three- to four-month-old owl think it was trying to fly from the rafters of the barn to the hood of one of the orginization’s Chevrolet ambulances, resulting in the owl being named Chevy.

The owl was unable to fly back up to the rafters and two technicians with the organization took the animal to the Wild at Heart Raptor rescue, which was concerned for the owl’s safety with nearby construction and increased coyotes in the area.

“Rescued this gorgeous owl today! Fell from his area and there are coyotes everywhere,” Andy Gallo, one of the two technicians, said in a post. “I called Wild at Heart and they said it would be best to get him out of harm’s way. They will care for him and set him free!”

The owl will now go into a foster family before being set free when it’s old enough to fly.

The Arizona Humane Society advises people who come across babies in the wild, whether kittens or wildlife, to not intervene and leave them be for their parents to return.

“Today’s case was unique due to a variety of safety concerns,” the organization said in the release. “It is times like this that specialized rescue groups are called upon to determine what gives the young animal its best chance of survival.”
