Arizona event wagering cools off in June during slow month of sports

PHOENIX — Event wagering in Arizona cooled in June, mainly due to a slow month of sports action.

The state’s take for the month was $766,000, gaming officials announced Monday. It was just the third time Arizona received under $1 million in a month since sports betting became legal in September 2021.

“Despite June being a historically slower month for sports betting, Arizona’s figures were strong nationally,” Ted Vogt, director of the Arizona Department of Gaming, said in a press release.

Arizona bettors wagered nearly $319 million in June, down from a $461 million total in the month of May.

That total ranked No. 6 among states.

Sportsbooks did have to payout $306 million (about 96% of bets), however, it was less of a payout then May, where they paid out nearly $405 million.

The total amount of wagers could have been down in the month of June with prominent sports leagues like the National Basketball Association and National Hockey League  wrapping up their seasons.

Major League Baseball was the only one of the four major sports to have game action the entire month.
