APS seeks third rate reduction related to tax reform for electric customers

PHOENIX – APS is seeking a third rate reduction since last year, one that Arizona’s largest public utility says will bring electric customers’ savings to more than $100 a year.

The price adjustments have been related to federal corporate tax cuts, APS said in a press release Thursday.

The first cut went into effect in March 2018, and the second started this month.

If the Arizona Corporation Commission approves the final change, the three adjustments will result in a $9 monthly savings for customers using the average amount of electricity, the release said.

“APS was one of the first companies to act on federal tax reform last year by passing the resulting tax savings back to customers, and it’s great to see those savings grow,” Stacy Derstine, vice president of customer service, said in the release.

Actual savings will vary based on use. It will show up on bills as “Tax Expense Adjustor.”

APS, which serves about 2.7 million people in 11 Arizona counties, including parts of Maricopa, didn’t indicate when it hoped to implement the latest reduction.

The release said that lower operating costs, an energy trading program and the tax reform adjustments have lowered customers’ bills by an average of $14 a month over the past year.
