APS pausing residential power disconnections over late payments

PHOENIX – Arizona Public Service, the state’s largest electric utility, said Thursday it was putting a temporary halt to residential power disconnections over late payments.

APS made the decision, in part, because of reports that heat may have been a factor in the 2018 death of a customer whose power had been turned off, the company said in press release.

The release said recent public comments at Arizona Corporation Commission open meetings, conversations with community stakeholders about safety and the onset of high summer temperatures were also factors in the decision.

APS said it would consult with community organizations, advocates for limited-income customers and other public agencies as it reviews disconnection policies over the next 30 days.

Customers will remain responsible for energy used while disconnections are suspended.

The company already offers several assistance programs, including price relief for low-income customers and crisis bill assistance.

APS serves about 2.7 million people in 11 Arizona counties.
