APS adds largest-ever energy supply for Arizona customers

PHOENIX — The Arizona Public Service company signed an agreement to add over 7,000 megawatts (MW) of energy supply to its customers, according to a news release last week.

The new addition will bring approximately 7,300 MW of energy to APS customers. This is enough power to run 1.4 million air conditioners. This is the largest addition to APS’s energy system in company history, according to the release.

The new supply of energy was made possible through APS’ 2023 All Source Request for Proposals (ASRFP), which is a set of projects that will see numerous upgrades to Arizona’s energy system, natural gas, solar and wind power. 

“With almost 7,300 MW of energy signed, this will be the largest energy supply we’ve ever procured through an RFP for APS customers. Most importantly, this portfolio will provide reliable, cost-competitive electricity, with 93% of this supply coming directly from clean energy technologies. I’m proud of our resource acquisition team’s diligent work to close the best project deals with the most value for our customers,” Brian Cole, APS vice president of resource management, said.

What projects are underway under the ASRFP?

Through the ASRFP, several projects are in development to bring more storage space as well as cleaner energy to its system. These include:

• The Ironwood Solar Plant, a new facility located in Yuma County.
• Added megawatts to existing power plants such as the Agave Solar Plant in Maricopa County.
• Additions in wind power.
• Expansion of natural gas.

The projects, including the Ironwood Solar Plant are expected to be completed by 2026, according to the release.
