All patrol officers in Phoenix-area police department to wear body cameras

PHOENIX — After almost a year of test runs, the Peoria Police Department will now require all patrol officers to wear body cameras.

All officers in the patrol services bureau have been issued a TASER Axon body camera in order to increase “effectiveness and efficiency,” according to a press release.

The camera is approximately the same size and weight as a deck of cards and will create an audio and visual account of an officer’s shift.

Officers will be required to download their footage at the end of each shift. However, officers will be able to edit and delete their own footage.

Both Arizona State University Police Department and the Gilbert Police Department began using body cameras in 2015.

The Phoenix Police Department may be the next to fully roll out body cameras after Mayor Greg Stanton called for their use earlier this year.
