ADOT offers warning about scam texts demanding payment

PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation issued a warning about a new text messaging scam that is impersonating the government agency and demanding payment.

ADOT said scammers are sending out text messages that are disguised to look like official messages coming from the Arizona Department of Transportation, or the nonexistent Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles.

Some of these messages contain the ADOT Motor Vehicle Division logo and are threatening penalties and legal action for unpaid traffic citations.

ADOT said there are two different versions of the scam that have been circulating, and both versions have grammatical errors and are originating from outside of the United States.

How to spot a scam text message

ADOT released some tips on how to avoid these scams and things to watch out for:

• Make sure not to click on any links in any suspicious text.
• ADOT said you should delete these texts immediately.
• The message says “DMV,” when ADOT instead has an “MVD.”
