ADOT changes lettering on freeway signs in Phoenix-area

PHOENIX — No, your eyes are not deceiving you.

There is new lettering on some southbound Loop 101 signs.

Doug Nintzel with the Arizona Department of Transportation said the Federal Highway Administration is allowing the state to use another font called Highway Gothic.

“Now that the feds decided to no longer include ‘Clearview’ as a font style, as [ADOT] replaces signs, we now use the long-time standard called ‘Highway Gothic,’” Nintzel said.

ADOT is not replacing every highway sign yet.

Instead, it’ll put up new signs as old ones wear out — usually after 15 years or so.

Other signs with the new lettering style include those on the newly-widened Loop 202 east of Loop 101 in Mesa.
