ADOT accepting entries for annual safety message contest

PHOENIX — Think you’re witty and have what it takes to educate Valley drivers about safety? The Arizona Department of Transportation has the perfect challenge.

The department’s annual safety message contest opened Tuesday for those looking to populate digital message boards above Arizona highways with quirky quips.

The contest is open through Monday. ADOT will select 12 finalists that the public will vote on.

The top two vote-getters, who will be selected in mid-March, will have their messages displayed on state highway signs.

“This will be the fourth time we’ve had the contest and each year the response has been tremendous with thousands of entries pouring in,” ADOT Director John Halikowski said in a press release. “We love seeing the creativity from so many, but we’re even more thrilled that people are thinking and talking about safe driving when coming up with their contest entries.”

Contestants can submit as many entries as they’d like, but they have to follow certain guidelines.

Messages must related to traffic safety and accommodate 18 characters per line and a maximum of three lines.

Hashtags, phone numbers, web addresses and emojis are not allowed.

Last year’s winning entries were “Drive like the person your dog thinks you are” and “Drink & Drive? Meet police and see new bars.”
