PHOENIX – A 7-year-old second grade student was caught with guns and ammunition at a southern Arizona school on Monday, authorities said.

The incident occurred at Cochise Elementary School in Cochise, Arizona, according to a social media post by the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies who met with school officials and the student learned that he had a gun and ammunition in his backpack. A second handgun was also located, but the sheriff’s office didn’t say where.

Deputies contacted the child’s parents and completed a juvenile referral for misconduct with a weapon and minor in possession of a firearm, the sheriff’s office said.

A sheriff’s spokeswoman said it was unlikely that the boy’s parents will face charges in the case, which remains under investigation.

Cochise is unincorporated community about 80 miles east of Tucson.

Monday’s incident occurred four days after a fourth-grade student was found with a loaded handgun at a Queen Creek charter school.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Correction: Based on initial reports from the sheriff’s office, earlier versions of this story incorrectly said the school was located in Bowie, Arizona.
