PHOENIX – Impairment is believed to a factor in a head-on collision that left one person dead and two others injured Wednesday morning in Phoenix, authorities said.

A silver SUV heading westbound on Thomas Road veered into eastbound traffic at 50th Drive and hit a brown passenger car around 6:30 a.m., the Phoenix Police Department said in a press release.

A passenger in the SUV and the driver of the car were hospitalized with injuries that aren’t considered life-threatening, police said. The vehicles didn’t have any other occupants.

“Preliminary information suggests impairment may be a factor,” Sgt. Philip Krynsky said in the release.

Traffic was restricted in the area while police investigated the scene.
