1 dead after pedestrian, vehicle collision in west Phoenix

An adult male is dead after he was transported to the hospital due to a collision in west Phoenix on Friday night.

PHOENIX — An adult male is dead after he was involved in a collision on Friday night.

Officers responded to a collision involving a pedestrian near 40th and Grand Avenues at about 10:22 p.m. on Friday, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Upon arrival, officers found a man, later identified as John Smith Alrick, in critical condition.

He was transported to a nearby hospital by the Phoenix Fire Department before he died, authorities said.

According to preliminary information, Alrick tried to cross Grand Avenue without using a crosswalk and was struck by a vehicle.

The driver stopped and remained at the scene, and he was evaluated for signs of impairment. None were observed.

The Vehicular Crimes Unit has assumed the investigation and it remains ongoing.
