1 dead, 1 in critical condition after 2 car-pedestrian collisions in Phoenix

PHOENIX – One person was killed and another was in critical condition after two car-pedestrian collisions Thursday night in Phoenix, authorities said.

Around 9 p.m., 65-year-old Michael Neathery was crossing 27th Avenue midblock south of Bethany Home Road when he was hit by a Chevrolet SUV, the Phoenix Police Department said.

Neathery was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The driver, a 37-year-old man who remained on the scene, said he tried to brake and steer around the pedestrian but couldn’t avoid the collision, according to police.

Then a little before midnight, a 54-year-old woman pushing a cart full of possessions on the shoulder of Indian School Road in west Phoenix was hit by a Buick sedan.

The woman was heading eastbound near 99th Avenue, where there is no sidewalk, and the vehicle was going westbound, police said.

The driver, a 63-year-old man, called 911 and remained on the scene, police said.

The woman, who was not identified by police, was hospitalized in critical condition with numerous injuries.

Neither driver showed signs of impairment, police said, and both incidents remain under investigation.
