SRP election results: How did Turning Point-backed candidates fare?

PHOENIX – The election for Salt River Project leadership drew far more attention than usual for the utility provider after Turning Point got involved.

Tuesday was Election Day after an early voting period that began March 11. Landowners within SRP’s 10 voting divisions were eligible to participate, with votes weighted by the size of the property.

Many of the races essentially developed into showdowns between candidates backed by Turning Point Action and a group that called itself the Clean Energy Team.

The unofficial results released Wednesday show Turning Point Action lost a majority of the SRP board seats to Clean Energy Team candidates. However, two Turning Point Action candidates — Chris Dobson and Barry Paceley — did win SRP president and vice president, respectively.

Maricopa County Supervisor Thomas Galvin celebrated both wins in a post on X, but called Turning Point Action’s overall showing a “complete botch job.”

SRP is made up of two organizations, the Salt River Valley Water Users’ Association (the Association) and Salt River Project Agricultural Improvement and Power District (the District). They are governed separately, but candidates typically seek the same positions for both organizations.

The Clean Energy Team was expecting to be outspent by a 10-to-1 margin by Turning Point Action, the political arm of Turning Point USA, the Phoenix-based conservative activist group founded by the late Charlie Kirk.

Here are the unofficial results from the contests that had candidates from both slates, with affiliations indicated by TPA for Turning Point and CE for Clean Energy (vote totals shown as District/Association in races covering both organizations):

The SRP election also covered Board of Governors seats for Divisions 2 and 10 and council seats for Divisions 2, 4 and 10. Voters with property located in divisions without Board of Governors and council races had only president, vice president and at-large board spots on their ballots.

The full unofficial results can be found on the SRP website. The final results will be canvassed on Monday.

SRP, which has about 1.1 million power customers in metro Phoenix, is a not-for-profit utility that does not have investors. The two elected boards work with management to establish policies.
