Vallarta Supermarkets opens 1st store outside California in West Valley

PHOENIX — Vallarta Supermarkets, a Latino-owned grocery chain, celebrated the opening of its first Arizona location on Wednesday.

The new store at 58th Avenue and Camelback Road in Glendale is the company’s first venture outside California.

The market was designed to be a community hub and features an in-house carnicería, homemade tortillas, baked goods, seafood, fresh produce and more.

“Vallarta offers high-quality authentic prepared food that will bring families together around the dinner table,” Glendale Mayor Jerry P. Weiers said in a press release.

The Phoenix Business Journal reported last month that Vallarta expected to employ about 200 people at the Glendale store.

Vallarta Supermarkets looking for wider expansion in Arizona

Vallarta Supermarkets, which was founded in 1985, plans to open 15 stores in the Grand Canyon State in the coming years.

It’s not the only supermarket chain with big plans for Arizona. Discount grocer Aldi aims to open dozens of new stores in metro Phoenix over the next five years, including 10 in 2026, as part of an aggressive U.S. expansion.
