Aldi announces national expansion plan that includes 10 new Valley stores in 2026

PHOENIX – Discount grocer Aldi plans to open dozens of new stores in metro Phoenix over the next five years as part of an aggressive U.S. expansion.

The supermarket chain, which originated in Germany, announced plans Monday to open 180 stores across 31 states in 2026, its 50th anniversary of U.S. operations.

Aldi entered the Arizona market in 2020 and now has 15 locations in the Grand Canyon State, primarily in metro Phoenix.

The company aims to open 10 new stores in the Valley by the end of the year and a total of 40 through 2030.

In a recent local development, the grocer bought 3 acres last month on the southeast corner of Power and Elliot roads in Mesa, on the border of Gilbert.

“One in three U.S. households shopped at Aldi this past year, and in 2026 we’re focused on making it even easier for customers to shop our aisles first,” Atty McGrath, CEO of Aldi U.S., said in a press release. “That means bringing Aldi to even more neighborhoods, upgrading our website and planning additional distribution centers to keep our shelves stocked with the products our shoppers love.”

Aldi plans include new distribution center in West Valley

As part of the growth, Aldi plans to open three new U.S. distribution centers by 2029, including one in Avondale projected to open in 2028.

The grocer expects to increase its store count to nearly 2,800 by the end of 2026 and 3,200 by the end of 2028.

“As we look ahead to our next 50 years in the U.S., we’ll continue to earn shopper loyalty by staying true to what’s made Aldi successful: keeping things simple and delivering real value,” McGrath said.
