Project to add 6 passenger gates, other upgrades to Sky Harbor Terminal 3 begins

PHOENIX — A $326 million Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport project will expand Terminal 3, according to a Thursday announcement from McCarthy Building Companies, Inc.

Six new passenger gates are coming to the North 2 Concourse in Terminal 3, which will bring the total number of gates up to 26.

Why is Sky Harbor Terminal 3 expansion needed?

The Sky Harbor Terminal 3 expansion project is necessary to help the airport serve a rising number of travelers, according to Phoenix Sky Harbor Aviation Director Chad Makovsky. Last year, 52.3 million people flew through the airport, which represented more passengers than ever before.

“Our new six gate concourse will provide airlines with more space to do business and also provide us with an opportunity to add new passenger services such as additional concessions and an inviting lounge featuring stunning views and premium amenities,” Makovsky said in the Thursday announcement.

Details about Sky Harbor Terminal 3 expansion project

McCarthy Building Companies Inc. will add around 173,000 square feet of space through the project.

Construction will also pave the way for a passenger level with gate hold rooms, more public restrooms and spaces for retailers and other tenants.

Additionally, the Terminal 3 expansion project will create an upper mezzanine level that will consist of a lounge, back-of-house areas and an exterior terrace. There will also be a separate level that will provide essential support spaces and aircraft service.

Not only that, but the Sky Harbor Terminal 3 expansion will also include a new, elevated connector build that will link the North 2 Concourse to the existing Terminal 3 processor.

Guests will also be able to use a future tunnel connection to Terminal 4’s North Concourse with moving walkways and elevators to make navigation as easy as possible.

Designers prioritized aesthetics in Sky Harbor Terminal 3 expansion project

According to Thomas Assante, the vice president of operations for McCarthy’s Southwest Region, leaders behind the project want it to be comforting, aesthetically pleasing and efficient.

“It is essential that all ongoing airport operations at the terminal continue with minimal disruption during the construction of this project,” Assante said in the announcement. “Fortunately, our McCarthy teams are well versed in managing construction projects at active airports airport, having successfully completed several expansion projects at the airport.”

The design will also include optimal views of Camelback Mountain, he added.

“Every portion of the new Terminal 3 concourse will provide an exceptional experience for Sky Harbor passengers,” Assante said.

Construction is expected to begin this month.
