Most of Desert Sky Mall reopens 1 day after roof collapse at west Phoenix shopping center

PHOENIX – The west Phoenix mall that was closed Wednesday night after a partial roof collapse has reopened.

Most of Desert Sky Mall opened Thursday for the usual weekday operating hours of 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The Mercado de Los Cielos area of the indoor shopping center at 75th Avenue and Thomas Road and few retailers remained temporarily closed in the wake of the roof collapse.

Why was Desert Sky Mall closed?

Firefighters responded to reports of a structural collapse at the mall around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday as storm activity was picking up in the West Valley.

Crews found a partial “drop ceiling” roof collapse at a dental office. The roof collapse severed a water line.

“(It) caused pretty extensive water damage throughout the business and the mall,” Phoenix Fire Captain Todd Keller told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Wednesday night. “Eventually, they shut down the entire mall. City of Phoenix structural engineers are on scene working with Desert Sky Mall management team on turning operations back over to them after they assess the damage.”

No injuries were reported.
