Arizona regulatory agency approves bill credit for APS customers

PHOENIX – The Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) unanimously approved a bill credit for Arizona Public Service (APS) energy customers at the regulatory agency’s meeting Tuesday.

Customers of Arizona’s largest energy provider are expected to receive approximately a $23 credit on their monthly bill over a two-month period this summer.

“I voted today with my fellow commissioners to approve a refund of overcollected funds to APS ratepayers during the hottest time of the year — July and August,” Commissioner Lea Márquez Peterson said in a press release. “This will assist families whose electricity bill increases during the summer due to higher usage with some financial relief.”

Why are APS energy customers getting credits?

APS will distribute a total of $52 million in credits as a refund of unused funds collected via Demand Side Management Adjustment and Renewable Energy Adjustment charges.

The company initially proposed one-time credits in May, but regulators changed the terms before approving it.

ACC Vice Chair Nick Myers made an amendment to the proposal that orders the utility company to disburse the credits during the summer.

“Arizona summer electric bills can be tough to bear. I’m glad the commission voted unanimously to adopt my amendment to return an overcollection of funds to the ratepayers in July and August,” Myers said in the release. “This will help offset some of their bill during the most needed time.”

The bill credits are coming after APS increased residential energy bills by an average of $2.10 on March 1.
