PHOENIX — About 100,000 people are expected to descend upon the Phoenix area next month for Super Bowl XLIX, and they reportedly will pay a pretty penny for a place to sleep.

The Wall Street Journal reported the average daily rate for a hotel room is up 89 percent over last year while occupancy rates are up 68 percent.

Last month, Kristen Jarnagin with the Arizona Lodging and Tourism Association said rooms that normally go for about $100 during this time of year could be as much as $400.

Hotels aren’t the only service in demand, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Phoenix officials are projecting a big boost in transportation alone, from a 50% increase in car rentals to 1,600 takeoffs and landings at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport the day after the game, a 33% increase over the average day there.

While the Super Bowl — and the NFL booking 20,000 of the Valley’s 55,000 rooms — is a big driver, the Phoenix area also hosts the Pro Bowl, Waste Management Open and Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction within one week of the big game.
