PHOENIX — The Valley of the Sun will be more like the Valley of the Chill after this weekend, the National Weather Service said.

The forecast calls for highs in Phoenix to be in the low to mid-70s through Saturday until a cold front moves into the area on Sunday.

“We have a fast-moving, strong low pressure system and cold front that will move through Sunday and Sunday night,” Chris Kuhlman with the weather service said. “By Monday, the high will be in the upper 50s. Tuesday’s high will be the same.”

That cold front will make for a chilly Sunday. The forecast calls for a balmy high of 67 degrees and a low of 45, but the real bite will come from the wind.

“It will also be pretty windy on Sunday too,” Kuhlman said. “Maybe 40 miles per hour in some areas at times.”

Kuhlman said the front won’t just drop temperatures. It’s expected to bring rain to the Valley and snow up north.

“We’re looking at a snow level of 3,500 feet and areas north and east of Phoenix could see a couple of inches of snow,” he said. “By Monday morning, most of the rain will be done. There could be lingering scattered showers in the Phoenix area.”

As much as one inch of rain could fall in some parts of the Phoenix metro area, though the weather service is expecting a quarter-inch in most areas. The showers aren’t expected to cause flooding.

The front is expected to send overnight lows to near-freezing temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Some outlying areas of the Valley could dip below freezing.
