A 2-year-old boy died Saturday night after he was pulled from a backyard pool in Phoenix, authorities said.

According to the Phoenix Fire Department, firefighters responded to a home in the area of 67th Avenue and Baseline Road around 9:45 p.m. following reports of a drowning.

Upon arrival, firefighters located the unconscious boy, who had been pulled from the pool and was not breathing. Family members said the boy had been underwater for an unknown period of time.

Firefighters performed life-saving efforts and later took the boy to a hospital in critical condition. He later died at the hospital.

Early information from the incident indicated there was no pool fence at the home, according to authorities.
