A 59-year-old woman walking in a crosswalk Friday night was struck by an SUV and later died at the hospital, authorities said.

The woman, who was not immediately identified, had disregarded traffic signals and was crossing when signals were indicating it was not yet safe to do so, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

The driver of the Ford Expedition involved in the collision remained on scene near 19th Avenue and Van Buren Street.

The vehicle was headed south on 19th Avenue when the woman was struck shortly before 7 p.m. Friday.
