Twice-yearly cougar shadow returns to the Superstition Mountains

Want to see the cougar shadow? It’s that time of year.

From Sept. 13-19, the natural phenomenon will be visible on the Superstition Mountains around sunset each night, depending on the weather.

The cougar shadow forms when the sun sets, creating a silhouette of a crouching cougar across the western face of the mountain. It becomes visible for one week each fall and spring.

The infamous shadow starts to become visible about 30 minutes before sunset and stays visible for about 20-30 minutes.

A popular viewing spot for the cougar shadow is near Superstition Boulevard and Goldfield Road in Apache Junction.
