Showers move through Valley, wetting roadways for morning commute

Rain fell in the Phoenix area on Sunday night and during the morning commute Monday.

Gabriel Lojero, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Phoenix, said the Valley could see light to moderate showers for several hours Monday morning.

“We’re not expecting much in the way of any major impacts, but we cannot locally rule out some heavier rainfall that can produce some … higher rainfall amounts,” Lojero told KTAR News 92.3 FM.

A flood watch is in effect for much of central, northern and eastern Arizona, including all of Maricopa County, until noon.

“If anybody encounters any flooded roadways, remember, turn around because you never know how deep the water can be. And you don’t want to drive through any flooded roadway,” Lojero said.

Measurable precipitation came down at some point Sunday night and Monday morning across much of the Valley.

While most of the rainfall was light, parts of north Phoenix and Anthem received over an inch Sunday night.

It didn’t rain Sunday night at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which the National Weather Service uses for the city’s official readings.

Phoenix started Monday with 1.25 inches of rainfall for the 2026 monsoon season. The normal total at this point in the season, which runs annually from June 15 to Sept. 30, is 1.83 inches.

The airport added 0.16 inches to the its total Monday morning.

How long will the Phoenix rain last?

The storm activity is expected to wind down by Monday afternoon. After that, it could be a few days before the Valley sees rain again.

“It looks like we’re going to head into a … quieter period starting tomorrow, potentially through Wednesday and Thursday. And then we may have another more active period upcoming as we head toward Friday and into the upcoming weekend,” Lojero said.

Thanks to the storm system, Monday is expected to be the first day since July 18 with a high temperature below 100 degrees in Phoenix.

“Temperatures are actually going to be quite nice, I guess, compared to what we could be for this time of the year, with highs mainly near to slightly below normal with highs in the 90s to lower 100s. So, no extreme heat expected for the next several days,” Lojero said.
