Man accused of destroying Phoenix speed camera in school zone, causing $47,000 in damage

A 20-year-old man was arrested Aug. 18 after police say he destroyed a photo safety camera in a school zone, causing more than $47,000 in estimated damage.

Brandon Ribadeneira was driving over the speed limit near Cave Creek Road and Deer Valley Drive when the camera took his photo, according to Phoenix police. Ribadeneira then pulled over, pushed the camera over and struck it repeatedly with a rock before leaving the area, police said.

He returned a short time later in a truck and attempted to drag the device down the street with a strap, causing additional damage before the strap broke, according to authorities.

The incident was captured on video obtained by investigators.

Phoenix police arrested Ribadeneira after serving a search warrant at his residence. He was charged with one felony count of criminal damage. He has since been released on bond, according to county records.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 31.
