Salt River Project offers Arizona teachers $400 classroom grants

Salt River Project is offering Arizona K-12 teachers a $400 classroom grant for completing one of the company’s education courses.

The classes cover a variety of topics related to the utility company, with teachers able to take the material back to their classrooms to teach their students.

Tori Galbreath, community activation strategist at SRP, said the course material follows the Arizona Science Standards.

“We offer eight workshops. They are specific to grade levels. They cover different topics kind of aligning with the utility topic, like electricity, magnetism, water, sustainability, renewable energy,” she said.

Nancy Quinlan, who teaches at Mesa Public Schools, has taken two of the SRP courses. She said the Powering Our Future classes are designed with specific grade levels in mind so teachers can choose the material’s difficulty level based on their students’ ages.

“They do the lessons with you so that when you go back to your classroom, you feel comfortable enough teaching this lesson instead of just looking at it on paper or watching someone else do it. The great thing is they also provide the materials,” Quinlan said.

SRP has offered the workshops for two decades. Each course is four hours long.

“Investing in education is one of the most important ways that we can support long-term success of the communities we serve. So, [we’re] investing in teachers we know, [who] then invest into the students and classrooms, which then is investing into the future careers and future workforce of Arizona,” Galbreath said.
