Maricopa County health officials announced Tuesday that they have identified six new sites with public exposure to measles in Phoenix and Chandler.

The Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH) said sites were related to a non-resident who had tested positive.

However, the number of confirmed infections among county residents has risen to 25 from 21 on Friday.

Officials highlighted the number as being high compared to the annual average of one case per year for the last 30 years.

“The continuing identification of new measles cases and exposures highlights how easily this virus spreads,” MCDPH chief science officer Dr. Ariella Dale said in a news release. “We have an effective, trusted vaccine that has kept the virus from spreading like this for decades. As a community, we can use that same tool to stop (the) spread now.”

People who were at the following locations during the listed time period should watch for symptoms:

  • The Taco Spot, 855 N. 54th St., Chandler on July 12 from 2:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. Watch for symptoms through Sunday, Aug. 2.
  • Sonesta Select Hotel, 920 N. 54th St., Chandler from 4 p.m. on July 12 to 1 p.m. on July 13. Watch for symptoms through Monday, Aug. 3.
  • Chase Field, 401 E. Jefferson St., Phoenix on July 12 from 7 p.m. to midnight. Watch for symptoms through Sunday, Aug. 2.
  • IHOP, 5020 E. Ray Road, Phoenix on July 13 from midnight to 3:30 a.m. Watch for symptoms through Monday, Aug. 3.
  • bb.q Chicken, 1900 W. Blvd., Chandler on July 13 from 11:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Watch for symptoms through Monday, Aug. 3.
  • Chandler Fashion Center, 3111 W. Chandler Blvd., Chandler on July 13 from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Watch for symptoms through Monday, Aug. 3.

The time windows include a two-hour buffer because the measles virus can linger in the air after an infected person leaves.

The six new sites come after seven new measles cases were reported Friday with two public exposure sites being identified in Surprise and Tempe.

Measles symptoms to watch for

Measles symptoms typically appear seven to 12 days after the person has been exposed but can appear up to 21 days post-exposure.

Symptoms of measles include a fever above 101 degrees, red and watery eyes, a cough, runny nose and a rash that is red, raised and blotchy.

It was noted that rash begins after the other listed symptoms and typically appears on the face at the hairline before moving down the body.

Those who develop symptoms are urged to stay home and call a healthcare provider to receive care and testing. It was noted that anyone who believes they’ve been exposed should call ahead and warn the provider about their symptoms and possible exposure.
